We kindly request your support for Concerned Citizens representatives to present the following proposal to the council on behalf of all New-Wes-Valley residents.
A resident at the recent council meeting expressed concerns regarding water quality. Although funding for a treatment plant has been approved, its completion will take several years, leaving residents without immediate assistance or compensation.
The concerned citizens group proposes the following interim measures:
- Establish free local filter and fill stations providing filtered water.
- Reassess water fees by exempting/reducing rates due to undisclosed toxins and health risks.
- Regularly post publicly the test results showing fluctuating levels of THMs and HAAs in our tap water.
A majority “Yes” vote indicates we will proceed with this request.
A majority “No” vote indicates we will not proceed with this request.

Anonymous votes will not be counted, as we cannot tell if they are just the same person voting many times, or if they actually are residents/property owners here.
Quick clarification on the free filtered water stations. Local businesses sell filtered and bottled water, so would this impose any issues or further complaints from businesses trying to operate in the area? Filtered or bottled water is a great way to draw in customers to possibly incur other purchases.
ReplyDeleteThat's a good point, Anonymous.
ReplyDeleteLet's keep the conversation going to get a good suggestion for what to do about that.
*Maybe have the town council pay the shops for the water?
*The town could give out some kind of coupon/token to pay for water that would be charged to the town's account by the shop we pick it up at?
*The town could give out rebates on filter systems or UV treatment systems, or reverse osmosis systems?
*Refund of all water taxes, considering we are not receiving water that is safe to use?
What does everyone think?
Let's share ideas!
I like the idea of a token system / reimbursement doesn’t take into consideration those who can’t incur the cost up front - people may say, “it’s only water” but that is dismissive there are many individuals that cannot afford or would not prioritize water over another household need if given a tax break, or a stipend. There are a few gov programs that give food in the same way. Need to think about making it accessible to all -
DeleteCould there be a subsidized delivery system considered? I recall a water truck that used to come to my community and you put your little flag up in the window.
I think using the current business systems is an option and the town just reimburses the business. I think there is a viable temporary option for the drinking water. Not sure what a temporary solution looks like for the potable water situation. Taxes are way to high to be using poison water.
ReplyDeleteNL has something called the “mother baby nutrition supplement” or “prenatal nutrition supplement” - where eligible individuals can show up to the grocery store and get a weekly allotment of certain types of healthy foods for the week. Could we treat water or water products or the correct water filters in the same way?
