THMs and HAAs: What You Need to Know!
Mr. Donald Sturge gave a very informative presentation regarding our drinking water at last night's council meeting. Below is a summary of his presentation. The data he presented at the meeting went back as far as 2014 (Mr. Sturge is not associated with this group) and we received permission from Mr. Sturge to post.

Thank you, Mr. Sturge, for your presentation at the Town Hall- it was very well done. I had heard a little about THMs and HAAs before, but this really helped me to understand the issue.
ReplyDeleteI'm wondering if the proposed water treatment plant that the Town Council is talking about will rectify this problem for us? I'm hoping someone who has seen the plans will respond here, as I don't see anything on www.townofnewwesvalley.ca that shows what the plan actually proposes. I've caught little bits of talk at Council Meetings, but have not been able to piece together what the plan is exactly.
I will certainly take all the precautions mentioned in this post, and help spread the word about this with my family and friends in the meantime.
Though the water treatment plant is a solution, has there ever been an interm solution while we wait? As a people of NWV the complacency is beyond. Let’s just live our lives in NWV getting slowly poisoned - people with young children? How do you sleep knowing this? More noise needs to be made here, our health is being shoved aside to create housing units? You won’t need to worry about a place to live if your water is slowly killing you. How can real estate and air bnb owners even sell or rent to individuals without telling them first that our water is poisonous? We all need to start using the words “poison” because that’s what it is. Build a pretty house on a hill, but let your water kill you slowly. We should all be ashamed for not being louder on this issue.
ReplyDeleteHere is a link to a great deal of information from Health Canada on the topic of our drinking water with details of what can be done and what we shouldn't do. We need to better educate ourselves on this topic, and we highly recommend reading as much as you can.

A great question for our town council, that residents need to ask, is if the proposed new water treatment plant was designed with the knowledge of our high levels of THMs and HAAs. Will you be asking the council this question? What else do you think we need to ask?
Ask the town council:
ReplyDelete1. How sure are we that the water treatment facility will actually rectify the problem once finished.
2. In the meantime, how are we providing sustainable clean and reliable water source to our residents until the treatment plant is fully functional? SUSTAINABLE, CLEAN & RELIABLE
3. How are we using our taxes to supplement #2 (above) this shouldn’t cost extra dollars, rather a reallocation of funds - clean water source should be a priority above all. We are paying taxes to basically have poison running out of our taps.
Yes. We need answers to questions!
DeleteI’m here to inform the residents of NWV if any of them are experiencing inflammatory skin or digestive issues it could be a result of showering/bathing in our poison water. Unfamiliar skin rashes, scalp rashes and hair falling out? Think it’s stress or hormonal? Think again, it could be your poison water you are washing with daily, many of you are still brushing your teeth with it I’m sure.
ReplyDeleteThat's interesting.
DeletePlease remember to give some research background- where have you found information on skin and scalp issues or digestive issues relating to THMs and HAAs? Not saying that this is faulty information, but we do need to be careful about what information is spread. Please show us how you came to that conclusion to keep it from being dismissed as gossip.
A quick Google search finds information saying that they "may" contribute to bladder and colon cancer, etc.
Let’s keep to the facts to prevent any fear mongering please. Last time I googled symptoms I thought I had a week to live when it was just gout. Seems like everything from the air we breath to the food we eat can be linked to different types of cancers so spreading misinformation and what aboutisms can be detrimental. The levels present in the water is 100% without a doubt a concern, but there are a lot of other communities with the same levels or more, this is not just a NWV issue. Has anyone tried contacting other communities to see what solution, if any, they’ve come up with while residents wait for the new water treatment plant to be constructed?
