"You for Council" campaign designed to boost engagement ahead of Oct. 2 municipal elections.
St. John's, NL - What does it take to be considered a leader in your community? Does leadership require a deep commitment to municipal politics and civic engagement? Or are the defining qualities of community leaders more ubiquitous? Like, for example, never missing a deadline and showing up when it matters the most?
As Newfoundlanders and Labradorians prepare to cast their ballots in municipal elections on October 2, Make Your Mark NL, a program of Municipalities Newfoundland & Labrador, has launched a new creative campaign encouraging more Newfoundlanders and Labradorians to participate by running, volunteering, or voting.
The campaign centres on Make Your Mark's belief that the people who would make the best councillors don't always see that potential in themselves. The campaign aims to make everyone in our communities a part of the movement to better their community, by identifying and encouraging the people they know would be great at the job to get involved. Instead of trying to speak to and inspire an individual candidate or volunteer, the "You For Council" campaign seeks to leverage grassroots "campaigning" in a bold new way.
"You For Council" is a multi-channel creative campaign rolling out across the province encouraging everyday citizens to run, volunteer, and vote to have a say. Featuring a clever mix of radio ads, digital ads, and a variety of high impact out of home placements, the "You for Council" campaign shines a light on the often-overlooked characteristics from our everyday lives that make "you" a qualified leader, an engaged volunteer, or an eligible voter.
"As a former municipal councillor and mayor, I can attest to the excitement of participating in local government – from being out on the campaign trail, to watching the results on election night, to sitting in the council chamber afterwards. It's a lot of hard work, but it's also very rewarding to connect with people and hear what's on the minds of the residents of your community. I would encourage any and all residents with an interest in public life to consider running as a candidate, volunteering to help out at a polling station, or even simply registering as a voter – the health and well-being of our communities depend on it." – Honourable Paul Pike, E.C.N.L., Minister of Municipal Affairs and Community Engagement
"Municipal elections play a vital role in shaping our communities, giving residents the chance to choose local leaders who reflect their values and priorities. We're excited about the possibilities this campaign brings as we encourage all Newfoundlanders and Labradorians to recognize the power of participating, whether as a candidate, a volunteer, or a voter. This is about strengthening local voices and empowering communities as they shape the future of their towns and regions." – Amy Coady, President, Municipalities Newfoundland and Labrador

It would be great to post and discuss the current CBC article. But we all know this topic will never be discussed. Bunch of cowards one and all. https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/newfoundland-labrador/nvw-concerned-citizens-1.7621579
